Armenian Lawyers Association welcomes Journalist Sergey Dmitriev from Radio France International

Yerevan, June 18, 2024 – The Armenian Lawyers Association (ALA) had the pleasure of hosting Sergey Dmitriev, a journalist from Radio France International. Dmitriev’s visit focused on understanding the ongoing challenges faced by Armenian refugees displaced from Nagorno-Karabakh and the initiatives undertaken by the Armenian government and the ALA to address these issues.

During the meeting, Mariam Zadoyan, Legal Expert of the project “Strengthening the Mechanisms for the Protection of the Rights of Forced Displaced Persons from Nagorno-Karabakh,” shared insights into the various programs aimed at alleviating the hardships faced by the displaced population. These programs include temporary protection measures, financial assistance for housing and basic needs, and a new housing support program. Ms. Zadoyan comprehensively explained the remaining issues and ALA’s steps to address them.

Ms. Zadoyan highlighted the legal assistance provided by the organization, emphasizing the critical role of the “Strengthening the Mechanisms for the Protection of the Rights of Forced Displaced Persons from Nagorno-Karabakh” project, which has been operational since February 1, 2024, with the financial backing of the European Union. The project has already made significant strides, providing 134 consultations, addressing numerous issues through correspondence with state authorities, and achieving notable successes in policy advocacy and individual case resolutions.

One of the key components of the project is the establishment of the Civil Society Organizations Network for the Protection of the Rights of Forced Displaced Persons from Nagorno-Karabakh, where the ALA acts as the Secretariat. Additionally, the upcoming launch of the Platform for the Protection of the Rights of Armenians of Artsakh – armrights.am – aims to offer beneficiaries access to legal advice, information, and active participation in resolving arising issues. This platform is set to become a hub for informed decision-making, legal support, and media visibility, fostering a holistic approach to addressing the diverse needs of displaced individuals.

Dmitriev expressed his admiration for the dedicated work of the ALA and the significant impact of their projects. The combination of media attention, legal advocacy, and government initiatives is seen as a pivotal step towards raising awareness and garnering international support for the displaced Armenians’ plight.

The Armenian Lawyers Association remains committed to advocating for the rights and well-being of displaced Armenians, ensuring they receive the necessary support for a smoother integration into society.
