The First Scientific Conference “Current State of Advocacy and the Prospects of its Development in the Republic of Armenia

The final oral round of the First Republican Scientific Conference for the Law Students “Current State of Advocacy and the Prospects of its Development in the Republic of Armenia,” which was organized by the Law Students’ Department of the Armenian Young Lawyers Association and the Legal Fund of Armenia, was held in Armenia Marriott Hotel in Yerevan at 11a.m., on May 20, 2004.

The Conference was supported by the Armenian office of ABA CEELI (American Bar Association Central and East European Law Initiative) and “Bookinist” book house.

The Conference was aimed at raising the level of the knowledge of law students and as well as to promote to the establishment of the Advocates institute in RA. It also provided opportunity to introduce a critical dialogue on the current state of the advocates’ institute in RA and to raise the issues of concern.

The conference had two rounds: written and oral. 48 students from the law schools of Yerevan as well as from the regions had applied for participation in the conference on April 23, in accordance with the approved schedule. 17 applicants introduced their reports in time. The authors of the best ten reports were authorized to take part in the final, oral round of the conference. A jury of well-known advocates, lawyers and judges was compiled to evaluate the best oral and written reports.

Lyudvig Davtyan, a third year student of the law faculty of Yerevan State University became the winner of the Scientific-Conference. He was the winner of the oral round as well.

Marina Simonyan, a third year student of the law faculty of Yerevan State University, won in the written round.

Sona Harutyunyan, a first year student of the law faculty magistracy of the RA State Institute of Management won the special prize of the Conference.

The winners received valuable prizes as well. It is foreseen to publish a book of the best theses of the Conference, which will then be distributed freely among the young lawyers and advocates.
