ALA Lawyer Experts discussed the Judicial and Anti-Corruption Reforms with Representatives Venice Commission

On 16 September, Narek Yenokyan and Artyom Mesropyan, Lawyer Experts of the Armenian Lawyers’ Association (ALA), participated in the meeting with the experts of the European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission}, who arrived in Armenia at the invitation of the Ministry of Justice to provide feedback on the draft laws on judicial reforms.

During the meeting with civil society representatives, ALA experts referred to the issues of securing the rule of law through the application of the transitional justice toolkit, which is the main focus of the draft 2019-2023 strategy, as well as introducing the developments related to the introduction of the new anti-corruption system in Armenia.

Experts presented to the Venice Commission Delegation the details of the controversial draft legislation on the formation of commission adopted by the National Assembly in the second reading a few days ago, drawing attention to the fact that it attempts to politicize the formation process of the commission as well as its impartiality and independence, which is not in line with internationally recognized principles.
