Discussion on the Reforms of Mining Legislation

Artyom Mesropyan, lawyer at the Armenian Lawyers’ Association, participated in a round-table discussion organized by the Mining Legislation Reform Initiative (MLRI) of the AUA Center for Responsible Mining) on November 6, during which the working groups tried to find out the problems that exist in the mining industry and identify the issues which require primary legislative solutions.

We would like to inform you that one of the purposes of the MLRI is to develop and submit to the competent authorities the legislative acts, which will increase the social and economic benefits of the mining industry and, at the same time, reduce the negative effects on the environment and public health.

Notably, based on the recommendations of the Armenian Lawyers’ Association, under the OGP Fourth Action Plan for Armenia, the RA Government has undertaken the responsibility to introduce the institute for disclosure of beneficial owners, by creation and operation of a comprehensive register on the state registration of legal entities, persons registered in separate subdivisions of legal entities, institutions and individual entrepreneurs within the State Register of Legal Entities.

The program envisages the introduction the companies operating in the mining sector in the institute for disclosure of beneficial owners, which aims to raise transparency and public oversight mechanisms in the sector.
